The convergence of social media and gaming is becoming harder to deny. The domination of the FarmVille Facebook game, the blockbuster acquisition of Playfish by EA, and the rise of the iPhone as a gaming platform immediately come to mind as examples of social media’s impact on the game industry.

The latter especially interests us. In September, Apple SVP Phil Schiller shared some interesting stats on the iPhone and iPod Touch as gaming platforms. While the Nintendo DS and Sony PSP had 3,680 and 607 games respectively, the iPhone app store had over 21,000 different games. You may not think it, but the iPhone and iPod Touch are gaming forces to be reckoned with.

That’s why gaming is the subject of this week’s Web Faceoff, where we take key tech, web, and social media tools and pit them against one another for your vote. Not only do we like to find out whether you prefer Windows 7 or Snow Leopard, but it’s also our opportunity to gauge the pulse of the social media universe.
